The Moment in the Memory

The look on Seeley’s face was void of any expression after the words left Brennan’s lips. She had said it and there was no going back. It was only her autonomic nervous system responding she told herself, as every part of her body tingled from the adrenaline that now surged through her system. She held her ground against the Fight or Flight response; she almost wanted to cry and she blinked hard to hold back tears.

Wait! Had she just said she was pregnant and that he was the father? This was all that Seeley’s mind could repeat. His heart was pounding in his ears and everything around him disappeared, but her face and those penetrating blue eyes that seemed to be searching his soul in this moment. This is what he had wanted; to move forward with Brennan and start living the life he knew they were meant to share. Every ounce of him knew this to be true, but there he stood frozen before this beautiful creature, delivering the words he thought he would never hear. Start small and then let her guide your next move he warned himself; this was Brennan and she was unpredictable in how she would react. Would she be the logical scientist he had come to rely on or would she let her emotions fly when it came to this.

It felt like an eternity before the corners of Booth’s mouth curled up into a smile. Brennan responded with her own smile and almost a sigh of relief. Booth reached out and took her left hand and raised it palm up to his lips and gently kissed where the heel meets the wrist, feeling the beat of her pulse. Brennan bit her bottom lip and shifted her weight slightly trying desperately to hold back tears now.

“I wanted to tell you as soon as I knew, but I was afraid you wouldn’t be ready for a baby in your life. Especially after saying that you needed time…” Before she could catch her next breath and finish her last words, Booth’s right hand found the side of her cheek and his thumb caressed her parted lips in a fluid movement cutting off the rest of what she was about to say. “I’m going to be a Dad! And you…you’re going to be a mom! That’s incredible Temperance!”

Booth had that look of an excited child, like he got when he saw the bleachers during the snow storm. He was truly okay with this and the fears that were welling up in Brennan were slowly dissipating. “Well, what do we do now Booth?”

“We enjoy it…We’ll never have this moment again Temperance! We savory it,” and with that Booth pulled Brennan into his arms and kissed her with such energy the electric shock could be felt in every part of Brennan's body. Then he kissed her on her cheek and he buried his face in her chestnut hair. He inhaled her scent and cupped the back of her head in his hand. He did not want to forget one instant of this and he held her tight.

She could feel the strength in his embrace and knew that everything was going to be alright. This was the path that recent events had led them down and Booth was solid as ever. He had held her like this on so many occasions, including the night Vincent had died and she had first wandered into his bed. He had held her like this as the sun rose the next morning and they lay there with their bodies entwined. He would hold her like this every day that she would let him from now until forever!
